I run for me. And I run for my Mom.

My mom had always been very fit and health conscious (save the Donatos personal pizzas she couldn’t get enough of). As kids, we were always involved in activities, constantly outside running and playing. She grew a lush garden and canned a crazy amount of vegetables. My mom, the suburban hippie, even made our baby food from the garden. I don’t recall a meal on our table that was ever missing a fruit and vegetable.

And she ran. She ran a lot. Although she didn’t start as a runner. My mom was a walker all her life. Whether it was on the beach, or through her hometown, she could walk for miles and miles. Often accompanied by a neighbor, a sister, a friend, or one or both of her daughters, we used this time to talk about everything going on in our lives. I remember in high school, we’d start down our sidewalk, and walk what seemed half of Lancaster, covering 4-5 miles roundtrip. Schoolwork, boyfriends, swim team, colleges. We talked about it all – with no interruptions.

She decided she could run. And she did. She had a couple close friends who were her regular running partners. What started as a couple miles, a couple times a week, grew into a love for the sport. She had all of the appropriate apparel, entered all of the 5ks, and eventually, registered for a half-marathon. She and her friend, Jenny, ran through the countryside on a mission. They wanted to run, run strong, and finish. And they did. A few half-marathons were under her belt now. It was hard to find the time to train, as she worked full time and had three children and a husband. She continued to run in the evenings, on the weekends, whenever and wherever she could. She ran the Spring 2006 marathon with her best time yet.

Always maintaining her stamina, she returned to training for another half marathon the next year. Her running partner and friend, Julie, started noticing something strange during their training. My mom was starting to weave. Typically very balanced and strong, she would work her way partly across the road without noticing. Julie adjusted, and moved her to the inside. This helped. Although once, while running through Lancaster, she suffered a fall and injured her face.

There were some other strange things going on that year – without solid explanations. My mom had been in a handful of fender benders. Although mostly involving her going up over a curb and flattening tires, these seemed more than fluke incidents.

When it came time for the half marathon in May of 2007, my Mom felt strong, but not as strong as she had following her training in previous years. To cheer for our running Momma, I met my Dad and his friend, Matt, in German Village along the running route, at the 11 mile mark. We waited. We waited what seemed to be too long. Her pace was faster than this. Then we saw Julie, looking great and running strong! This was odd, since my Mom was typically a stronger runner than Julie. Assuming she was close behind, Julie let us know that she had fallen back a bit, and there was a concerned medic watching her for a little while. We told Julie to run on, and we would find my Mom. We started heading against the runners, along the route, looking for her. Then we saw her. She was walking. She was leaning very far to one side, and was again weaving along the road. Do you remember the old V8 commercials where someone would lean to almost a 90-degree angle before their V8 allowed them to walk upright? Well, she looked like that. The medic asked that we stop her. This went without saying, as she was very visibly not ok. It took some convincing. And some anger. And some tears. But she stopped. In walking distance, we went to Matt’s house and she had something to eat and drink, and decided she really was fine, just tired.

Two months, three leading hospitals, and four neurologists later, she was diagnosed with Corticobasal Degeneration. A wicked neurodegenerative disease with no treatment and no cure. Those strange symptoms we were noticing were really just the beginning. She continued running casually, and going on long walks with friends, until it became unsafe for her.

A lot has transpired for my Mom since the Summer of 2007. In three short years, she’s aged as many decades. She won’t be able to travel to Columbus to the race to cheer me on tomorrow, for my first half-marathon, as it’s been difficult for her to leave the house lately. My husband, son, sister and others will be there when I cross the finish line. And I know, without a doubt, that my biggest cheerleader will be cheering me on from home. I hope I make her proud.

Take me out to the baaaaaaall game

We were invited to join some friends in a suite for last night Columbus Clippers game! We had planned to go to a game soon anyway, so timing was great. Especially since it was so cold last night! We went to a game last year, when Emerson was about 9 months old. So different this time around...he loved it!

Emerson loves hot dogs, so had one of his favorite meals...

Nice view!
Hi, buddy!

Uh, yeah. Not so much interested in the mascot. You guys enjoy it.

That mascot wasn't taking NO for an answer!

Hiding out until that crazy bird leaves!

Look at that cute little rumpus.

Such a little boy!

Handwashing turned bathtime. In the kitchen sink.

Emerson very much likes to wash his hands. Before meals. After meals. After coming inside from playing. When Mommy washes her hands. When Daddy washes his hands. You get the idea.

What started as hand washing at the kitchen sink, turned into playtime. He's always been a fan of water, from swimming in pools, lakes and ocean, to bath-time, shower-time, etc. No matter what the situation, this kid loves water.

Take a look...

He thinks it's really funny to dip his head under the water.

And this is the face he makes EVERY time he comes up!

And here we go again...

And there's the face again! It's so funny...his eyes get really big, and he flutters his arms and gasps. But keeps doing it over and over again!

No worries, we didn't let him actually use the dish sponge. The strategic placement, though, saves me some time in cropping the nude pictures!

Another dip...

Do little boys GET any happier than this???

Whirlwind weekend...

Life is a little crazy right now. Beyond the usually busy schedules of work, running, school, play, eat, etc. we've been dealing with a lot with my mom's health. A very turbulent time, to say the least.

My brother, Jared, celebrated his 22nd birthday a couple weeks ago, and his gift from his big sisters and brother-in-law was a ticket (and our company) for the Tim McGraw concert, Friday night. Some liquid therapy and cowboy boots was just what we all needed. Emerson got to hang with Auntie Terra and Uncle Andrew, who will have a little one of their own in just a few months!

(see a familiar face among those margaritas???)

Saturday morning brought rain. This was fine with us, since we were all worn out from the week and Friday night events. We laid low all day, and just enjoyed the down-time, which includes catching up on laundry and cleaning. We stayed in pajamas as long as was acceptable.

Sunday, we headed to Lancaster to spend time with Mia and Poppy. After lunch, we enjoyed some outside time, which for Emerson, included a couple impacts with the driveway. Check out that skinned knee!

Happy 3rd birthday, today, to Emerson's "big" cousin, Kendall!

"Hello, Emerson's phone!"

Emerson is getting to an age where he loves imagination play! He has pretend conversations on his phone. Here's a couple quick (30 second) videos of him playing with his Fisher Price phone last night...

Hats! Hats! Hats!

Emerson has LOVED putting on hats, lately. He has a favorite, a green John Deere hat. After seeing that I was wearing a hat, yesterday, he insisted on wearing his to the grocery. He also likes to take Jason's hats off his head and place them on my head and his head. He thinks this is really hilarious and cackles every time.

Outside time

We've been loving the outside time...even with the chillier weather the last few days...

Frick and Frack
He would play basketball for HOURS...and loves playing with the big boys (Don, Andrew, Jason)

Maybe the best pose ever.

Watching his Dad mow...wishing he was out there...
Helping?

Snack time!

"Awww...MOM!"

"Just doin' my work!"

PJs and cartoons

We've had a crazy couple of days, spent a lot of time in the hospital and otherwise, and were so eager for normalcy this weekend. We've been doing projects around the house, making homemade meals, and just chillin'. It's been really lovely.

Uh-mo. Uh-moooooo. (Elmo)

Emerson has taken a liking to a certain red, fuzzy creature. He doesn't get to see Sesame Street on TV very often, as it's on during the day when he's at school, but he has a lot of books, and a few pieces of clothing with Elmo on them.

He has one sweatshirt that he actually tried to feed!

Quick video of Emerson telling us who is on his shirt...

Talky, talky, talky, happy talk....

(The title of this blog is in homage to "South Pacific" - a favorite among many musicals I watched a thousand times over growing up)

Emerson is a complete chatterbox! He'll repeat anything, and seems to learn dozens of words every day. From the basics like apple and water, to names for family and friends!

He repeats at least one word from every sentence spoken to him and knows many phrases. Some favorite phrases include:
  • Where did it go - "Whey dee da gooo" (go is said in a notably high pitch)
  • Happy birthday - "Happay Badday" (previously 'habba dabba', this one sometimes has an extra syllable on the end)
  • Help, please - "Hup, peeeee" (I love his "please". It's always very dramatic.)
  • Thank you - "Dink oooo"
  • More, please - "Muh, peeeee" (again, with the dramatic "please")
We're big on manners, and Emerson seems to truly understand how to use them (can you see me beaming with pride as I type?).

Emerson responds to questions with intentional answers. When his play cell phone asks him if he "wants to come out to play" he always answers back with "noooo", pronounced "neau." (French in a past life???)

It's fascinating to see him learning! Jason and I have always spoken directly with Emerson, but it's so fun to have full blown conversations with him.

A recent favorite word is basketball ("baball"). Emerson had such a great time in Toledo on Easter weekend playing basketball with his cousins, that we decided to get him his own hoop. Let the games begin!

Easter - Take One!

What a crazy week! With some planned renovations to our kitchen last week, Jason and I started on Tuesday, and took off all cabinet door and drawers for some major clean up and painting. On Wednesday we had granite countertops installed, with a gorgeous new single-basin sink and faucet. Wednesday night, we worked on cabinets and sanded, cleaned, primed, etc. Thursday evening, we sanded, cleaned, painted the first coat. Work, work, work! But all was going swimmingly, and we were so excited for our newish kitchen!

Jason and I had two really late nights W and Th, ending our work around 2am both days. All done in the evenings following our normal work days. Somehow, in moving the fridge around Thursday night, the tiny little hose that runs into the fridge for water and ice sprung a leak. That tiny little leak ran all night. The next morning (Friday), we had a flood in our kitchen and unfinished side of the basement. After 8 hours of cleanup, and many, many trips up and down the stairs, we have a dry basement. And a gorgeous kitchen. So, when it came time to relax and enjoy the Easter weekend in Toledo, we were BEYOND excited! We headed up Saturday morning, after another 2am bedtime the night before in finishing up all the drawers, cabinets and hardware installation.

A casual cookout Saturday night, the Easter festivities began Sunday morning with a trip to Jason’s childhood church, St. Joan of Arc with the grandparents, aunt/uncle and cousins. For a 2-hour service, Emerson did great! After church, we tried to get a few pictures while everyone was still dressed up, then out for an Easter egg hunt. Emerson was only crawling this time last year, and not especially into looking for eggs. After a little guidance this year, and the help of his cousins, he got the concept and loved looking for eggs!

The weather was gorgeous, and after a yummy meal by Auntie Mel, we sat outside for hours watching the kids play and enjoying the sunshine. Emerson especially loved playing basketball with his cousins. He must have shot a few hundred times. And made a lot! We drove back to Columbus Saturday night, and were all completely worn out! This week, we’re catching up on life a little after the mayhem with the kitchen, basement, and Easter weekend. And of course, looking forward to doing this all again with the Linebergers on Sunday!

Goofin' around Saturday night

Almost got all four of them in a picture! Emerson is clearly too busy doing yard work.

Mimmy, Dzia Dzia, and all the kids

He is so done with pictures.

Attempt at a family shot.

Now both families...

And now everyone! Darn that sun!

Emerson is ready to get back to work!

Now, time to hunt for eggs!

Since when does the bunny bring Doritos???

Some good swing time with Mimmy and Dzia Dzia

Loving the back yard with the cousins!

And the front yard!

More hoops...

What a great weekend with family! Good times had by all!!!
