Emersonisms - September Edition

There are always a few that come to me after I publish this monthly post. I try to write them down regularly, but this boy seems to have an arsenal of comedic material...

At the risk of overexposure...

Emerson: "Mommy's pooping."
Jason: "Oh, that's nice, Em."
Emerson: "I thought only boys poop."
Jason: "Your Mom would lead you to believe that."

Aunt Jeeka spent a couple days in the hospital, and I was there with her. I was explaining to Em where I'd been, and what was going on, and he'd already been pretty well informed by Jason. And I asked him, "Did you pray for Jeeka last night?" and his response, "I always pray for Jeeka."

Emerson: "How many days till Hilton Head?"
Me: "About a week. Did you know Hilton Head is an island? Do you know what an island is?"
Emerson: "Yep. Where there's treasure."

Emerson: "I really want to marry Scarlet."
Me: "Ok. But you realize you won't be allowed to. You can't marry your family...so no aunts, brothers, sisters, parents...make sense?"
Emerson: "But I'm still going to marry her."Me: "Well, when do you want to get married?"
Emerson: "When I'm 54."

Me: "Then you have some time...maybe they'll change the law."

This is a conversation we have every few weeks, always initiated by Emerson.

And a few one-liners...

“Can you unlock this string?” The draw string on his soccer shorts can be troublesome. And locks, apparently!
“I only did that back when I was in preschool.” He's so advanced with his Kindergarten status.
“I do not know what you are talking about.” He says this, very matter-of-factly to people on the phone and in person if he doesn't understand them, or they ask a question above his head.
“This food is so boring.” This is in response to anything he isn't interested in eating.

We'll have some serious quality time in the next ten days as we head to the beach, so surely there will be a special edition of Emersonisms in the near future.

Honey Crisps with my honeys.

Every year at this time, since my darling Emerson was born, we head to the orchard to pick apples. There's something really perfect about taking bites of a just-picked apple, while cruising the rows. We try to arrange our outing to align with Honey Crisp season. These are the best apples. Ever. Hands down.

Last year, Scarlet was introduced to this tradition, although she slept in the Bjorn the entire time. Almost as much as I love apple picking, I also love putting them to use. Applesauce to eat and can. Apple chips in the oven. Apple muffins. And fresh, sliced apples for every meal.

My kids share my love for apples. They both quickly found their "pick." Emerson ate his while holding the bag as I filled it. And Scarlet worked her way through one apple for over an hour. In the orchard. At the playground. On the way home. And at home.

And our house will smell better than a Yankee Candle all weekend!!!

A day at the lake. Berlynn Marie turns three!

Days on Buckeye Lake are different now, than college and post-college days. Back in the day, Terra and I, and whoever else was free, would head out to her Dad's near Memorial Day, clean up his boat, and spend the summer weekends gallivanting around Buckeye Lake. Most weekends, we had nowhere to be, so we gassed up, and headed out. What's that you say? Lunch and beers at Papa Boo's at 10am? Sure! 4pm...let's swing by Copper Penny and people watch while we drink a few Busch Lights in cans. Gone are those days. Now, we have a different kind of fun when we visit our favorite backyard lake.

Berlynn turned three earlier this month, so we celebrated by taking the boat out with the Lipps, and after pizza at Papa Boo's with their entire family, headed out to the sandbar with the kiddos. I love sharing this experience, although different, with the next generation.

The birthday girl and Emerson...ready to roll!

Scarlet...less than pleased about wearing a life jacket.

Her sense of humor is well beyond her years.

This was before the sun came out. He loves the water...the boat...everything about it.

The Lipps. The best friends a family could ask for.

A very excited birthday girl.

There's that sun! Look at that glorious lake behind him!

The fam. Scarlet needed this nap. And I love Emerson's face in this. One-eyed Willie...holding onto his towel and snack cup, pretzel in mouth.

Gotta love that the babes will nap on the boat. Norah didn't want to be left out.

Zonked.

Cap'n Em. And Mr. Tom.
